The name Alexandrite comes from the fact, that the gemstone was first discovered in the emerald mines in Russia in 1830, on the day of Prince Alexander II of Russia's birthday.
The color of Alexandrite changes under different lighting conditions. If viewed in daylight, its color is greenish blue to dark yellow-green. If viewed in incandescent or candle light, its color is pink to red. It is said to promote spiritual growth by balancing mind and emotions and calming soul.
